Review: Mathews Food & Drink

When we heard through the grape vine that there was a special restaurant offering beautiful, handcrafted glittery cocktails, we had to investigate and determine the location of this rare hidden gem.

After scrolling through Instagram for a hot second, we discovered Mathews Food & Drink in Jersey City, New Jersey. Ten minutes later, our table was booked.

We headed downtown to the spot where Mathews is conveniently located just two blocks away from the Grove Street PATH Station (a very quick 15 min train ride from Manhattan). With a southern inspired menu, (and as former southern belles ourselves), we were excited to see what Mathews had in store for us.

We were seated immediately, taking a moment to admire the beautifully designed dining room and bar. We would describe Mathews interior as rustic country with a modern twist. And unlike most of Manhattan’s restaurants, Mathew’s had plenty of room for customers to wine and dine.

Once we settled into our cozy booth, we ordered our first round of drinks. Of course, we immediately ordered the signature cocktail, the “80’s Glam.” This dazzling beverage is made with Gin, Passion Fruit, Lime, Lavender, egg white foam, and of course…EDIBLE GLITTER on top. Not only did it look beautiful but it tasted refreshing and dangerously delicious.

The other handcrafted drink that caught our eye was their “Monkey Business,” which is made with rum, pineapple, bananas foster, lime and Creme De Cacao. This cocktail transported us to a tropical paradise!

Their hand crafted cocktail menu makes Mathews (in our opinion), the best spot in Jersey City to get the most unique and artfully made beverages.

Even though we would’ve been perfectly content sipping from the inventive cocktail menu all night, we were anxious to try some of the food. For a starter, we ordered the “Sweet Corn Fritters” because lets face it…we wanted to reminisce back to our ole’ Kentucky roots! The fritters were fried to golden perfection, and stuffed with juicy chunks of Rock Shrimp, Pimento Cheese and served with a dash of Herb Salad for garish. Let’s just say these may have upstaged our mom’s fritter recipe, but that’s just between us!

Last, but certainly not least, we ordered our entrees. The “Grilled Hanger Steak” came with corn and a sweet potato puree. It was stunning in every way possible. The presentation, the color and taste were on exactly on point. The steak was cooked medium well (just the way we asked) and when we mixed the juicy meat with the sweet potato puree- our taste buds exploded.

The second entree we ordered was called the “Black Bass,” and was made with Roasted Salsify, Golden Beet Mustard, and Herb Carolina Rice.

We left this delicious dining establishment extremely satisfied with full bellies and happy hearts. Their beautiful food and creative cocktails should put Mathews on the top of your “must-eat” at places in the NYC Metro area. Mathews Food & Drink is open during the week for lunch starting at 11 am and dinner begins at 5 pm (brunch coming soon).
